Program Criteria: The board shall review the information concerning a continuing education course provided under 20:41:08:04 and may grant or deny approval based on the following: (1) Sponsorship of the course; (2) The qualifications and experience of the instructor; (3) The applicability of the subject matter to the practice of chiropractic as a healing art.

| CONDITIONS FOR RECIPROCITY/ENDORSEMENT: (1) Applicant has passed all parts of the National Boards required at the time of graduation; (2) has actively practiced a minimum of five years immediately preceding the submission of the application; (3) has no investigations pending; and (4) has no adverse actions taken by another state board. After review of an applicant’s application and record, if the board has any remaining concerns about the applicant’s clinical competency, the board may require the applicant to take and successfully pass the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners (NBCE) Special Purposes Examination for Chiropractic (SPEC) or the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners Part IV Examination. The board shall determine the score for successful passage and shall consider the NBCE recommended score to make that determination. |

Min. # years pre-professional education required for licensure: 2 years, however, the minimum requirements for licensure in the state of South Dakota for licensees graduating on or after January 1, 2011 will include a baccalaureate degree in addition to a doctor of chiropractic degree. The Bachelor’s degree may be granted by an accredited undergraduate program or by the chiropractic college or university that can offer a dual degree. |

SUMMARY OF SCOPE OF PRACTICE:

Chiropractic is the science of locating and removing the cause of any abnormal transmission of nerve energy including diagnostic and applied mechanical measures incident thereto. Integral to chiropractic is the treating of specific joints and articulations of the body and adjacent tissues, to influence joints or neurophysiological functions of the body, or both, including the use of examination and treatment by manipulation, adjustment, and mobilization of a joint. No chiropractor may practice obstetrics or treat communicable diseases. The requirements of this section do not apply to those licensed pursuant to chapter 36-4. |

Certified Clinical Chiropractic Assistants: board certifies chiropractic assistants upon application and verification that the CA has completed 20 hours of board-approved training and passing of approved test. CA's are also required to be CPR certified. Board certifies chiropractic x-ray technicians upon application and verification of 36 hours of board-approved training and passing of applicable state exam.
Chiropractors defined as Primary Care Physicians: Yes in regards to Medicare, work comp and some insurance plans, but not all encompassing. Statutory interpretation of the codified laws of South Dakota does not refer to chiropractors as physicians. |
