The Federation does not provide interpretation of the scope of practice laws or rules of any chiropractic licensing authority, nor can we provide specific details regarding licensing requirements. The educational and testing requirements for each State or Province set forth in this Directory are intended as a general guide. It is strongly recommended that anyone interested in becoming licensed in a particular State or Province contact the Board office or the Secretary of the respective board to secure current and complete details before matriculating in any school.

CONTINUING EDUCATION:
  Requirements: Forty-eight Hours (48).
Distance Credits Allowed: must be board-approved for formaul continuing education 
Program Criteria: Physician level instruction, approved by Board. Contact Board for Application for Course Approval.
Board accepts the uniform continuing education form: No
Board requires sexual boundaries training: No. Expanded categories of CE have been developed.
Board requires AIDS awareness / risk prevention training: No.  Expanded categories of CE have been developed.
Other special areas of specific CE training required: At least 24 hours of the required 48 hours of continuing education shall be earned by attending formal continuing education programs, seminars and/or workshops that have been approved by the board. (A) A licensee shall obtain the required formal continuing education hours from no less than three of the following categories: (1) diagnostic imaging (x-rays); (2) differential or physical diagnosis or both; (3) ethical practices -- acceptable courses include topics such as professionalism, doctor-patient relationship, legal issues and responsibilities, confidentiality, and advertising; (4) emergency procedures -- CPR and/or first aid offered by the American Red Cross or other board-approved sponsoring organization shall be acceptable; (5) Human Immunodeficiency (HIV), infectious diseases and/or universal precautions; (6) cerebrovascular accident (CVA) and/or transient ischemtic attack (TIA); (7) disk injury; (8) aggravated spinal conditions and/or injury; (9) record-keeping and/or Subjective Objective Assessment Plan (SOAP) notes; (10) soft tissue injury; (11) nutrition; (12) chiropractic principles and/or technique(s); (13) health promotion and wellness; (14) case studies in chiropractic that consist of presentations relating to articles published in scholarly journals, treatises, or textbooks used by board-approved Council of Chiropractic Education (CCE) colleges and/or universities and evidence-based and/or value-based studies; (15) insurance consulting; or (16) Meridian therapy/acupressure/acupuncture.  Licensees who hold specialty certifications must have 12 hours in their specialty field. MTAA certified chiropractors must have 12 hours in acupuncture; Insurance consultants must have 12 hours in Insurance claims review.
Optional Certifications: Certifications available for Insurance Consulting and MTAA (Meridian Therapy / Acupressure / Acupuncture). 12 hours of CE in specialty to maintain certification.
Other specialty certifications subject to board approval.
         
CONDITIONS FOR RECIPROCITY/ENDORSEMENT: Education and examinations must be equivalent to Missouri. The Board may require an applicant to successfully complete the SPEC examination if the licensing authority requirements for securing a license in the other jurisdiction are not equivalent to those required for licensure in Missouri.

SUMMARY OF SCOPE OF PRACTICE:

The “practice of chiropractic” is defined as the science and art of examination, diagnosis, adjustment, manipulation and treatment both in inpatient and outpatient settings, by those methods commonly taught in any chiropractic college or chiropractic program in a university which has been accredited by the Council on Chiropractic Education, its successor entity or approved by the board. It shall not include the use of operative surgery, obstetrics, osteopathy, podiatry, nor the administration or prescribing of any drug or medicine nor the practice of medicine. The practice of chiropractic is declared not to be the practice of medicine and operative surgery or osteopathy within the meaning of chapter 334, RSMo, and not subject to the provisions of the chapter. The practice of chiropractic may include meridian therapy/acupressure/acupuncture with certification as required by the board.
